Enlightenment is Playing Uno With Your Child

On May 24, 2009, in Blog, by Anthony

A  young disciple asked his teacher:

“Teacher how do you put enlightenment into action?  How do you practice it in everyday life?”

“By eating  and sleeping,” replied the master.

“But master, everybody eats and everybody sleeps.”

“But not everybody eats when they eat and not everybody sleeps when they sleep.”

What does this mean…

It means to be fully present in the midst of all your actions.  It means not letting your ego or your conditioned mind take you away from what you are doing.

For me, it was recently playing Uno with my son.

I had a tornado in my head.  I was not there.

Then suddenly something took over and said, “Just play Uno with your son!”

And I did.

That is enlightenment!

Until next time…

Kind Regards,

A

Great reminder Anthony that what those around us need most is US – undivided attention – US! How many times I am frustrated when my girls “demand” that I stop and look at their “masterpiece” or play Candyland for the zillionth time. Yet, this IS life in it’s very simplest and purest form. If I don’t live and love well in the little things of live, accomplishing “the big things” will be a hollow victory.

    How old is your son?

    Hi Pam,

He will be 11 in June. Wow! He was just a baby yesterday.

I often catch my mind wandering everywhere and not being in the here and now. I don’t mind but when it comes to children, they need our full attention. Nice post!

    Anthony,

That is so true. I need to pay more attention to the here and now more often.

  5. Hi Anthony,

what a superb point, indeed. When we want to create intimacy in our relationships, whether in romantic relationships as a single boomer, or with our parents, our sibs, or in your case with your son, what they most want is that we are actually WITH them when we are WITH them.

Leave our cells phones turned off in another room. Turn off the computer. BE with them.

    What excellent advise, indeed.

    Anthony,

Yesterday was just memory and tomorrow will be a dream. That’s why today is called the Present.

Enlightenment is getting rid of what we haven’t got in the first place.

  8. We can find enlightenment when we focus. I think we find it hard to believe that enlightment resides in our own minds and not in something outside ourselves. We can all find enlightenment if we choose to look for it.

One of the reasons i’m so far behind in my course is because it’s hard to blog while having a starwars light saber fight with my 10 year old son. Wherever you are “be there”!

  16. Said so perfectly in such few sentences. I hope every parent experiences this type of enlightenment when their focus wanders from what is actually important to what they percieve as important.
